The World Series - 103 Years of October Magic

By: Denise Miller

In case you were in a bubble somewhere and didn’t hear, the St. Louis Cardinals are the new World Series Champions after beating the Detroit Tigers in five games with a score of 4-2! David Eckstein was named the M.V.P.

It is their 10th World Series Championship, a proud ball club indeed! The World Series of baseball has captivated the American public for 103 years. Generations of baseball fans have felt the excitement of watching their favorite team get to the playoffs, win for their league and become part of history. It is a rite of passage for fathers and sons, moms and daughters too.

The World Series began in 1903 when National leagues Pittsburgh and American leagues Boston agreed to hold a series of games to decide the Best of the Best.

Since then, only two years have not seen a series, 1904-for unclear reasons and then in 1994, when there was a strike.
Now for four to seven days every October, the tradition continues. We revel in the storied CY Young of Boston, Babe Ruth in New York, Willie Mays, Tom Seaver, Reggie Jackson and today’s heroes.
The New York Yankees won 26 times! The New York Mets (my team!) won twice, 1969 and in 1986.

The Game of Baseball and the World Series has lasted through wars, depressions, good times and bad, on TV., radio and now on the Internet. The very best experience is to see it live!

According to Mark Newman, sportswriter for MLB, the World Series uses all of your senses. "You see Lou Brock sliding safely for a steal….feel the earth shake at Candlestick Park….taste two hot dogs….smell the leather gloves….hear the bats cracking the balls and Frank Sinatra’s "NEW YORK" in Yankee Stadium after another win."

The World Series of Baseball lights up the imagination, is tense and exciting, teaches us all to dream and believe and is a wonderful American Tradition
