NFL - Brett Favre

By Edwin Learnard

On August 7, 2008, an end of an era came in Green Bay and another one began in New York. After retiring, then making the decision to un-retire, then becoming re-instated and entering into extensive communications with the Packers for naught, Brett Favre has officially become a member of the New York Jets and has severed ties with the Green Bay Packers. After nearly an entire off-season of speculation, there is finally closure on the Brett Favre saga. In return for getting Brett Favre, The Jets will give the Packers a conditional pick. The pick will be based on how much Brett Favre plays and how the Jets finish this season. The Packers will receive a 3rd round pick if Favre is involved in 50 percent of the plays this year. If he plays at least 70 percent of the plays and the Jets make the post-season, then the Jets would relinquish a 2nd-rounder. If the Jets win the AFC Championship and Favre takes at least 80 percent of the snaps, the Jets will give the Packers a first round selection. It was reported that Brett Favre's first choice of where he wanted to be traded to was the Minnesota Vikings.

He should be able to significantly help a team that was 26th in total offense last year (294.7 yds./game).The Jets passing offense was ranked 25th out of 32 teams (188.4 yds./game).The Jets were also ranked 25th in the NFL last year in points per game (16.8). These rankings should improve dramatically with Favre as the starting QB. The Jets finished 4-12 last season and hope to, at the very least, make a playoff run with Brett Favre at the QB reigns.

Brett Favre should give the Jets stability at the QB position. Chad Pennington put up respectable numbers in his 8 year tenure with the Jets, (82 TDS, 55 INTS,13,738 YDS,65.6 comp. pct.) but he was plagued by an injury and had only one season in which he started all 16 regular season games (2006). Ironically enough, Brett Favre will square off against Pennington in the Jets 1st regular season game this year, Sept.8 in Miami.

Brett Favre holds multiple NFL records−he has the all-time record for TD passes (442), wins (160), and yards thrown (61,655). He also holds the record for most consecutive games played by an NFL player at 275 (253 regular seasons, 22 post-season). Favre's consecutive game record is comparable to MLB's Cal Ripken's record of 2,632 straight games played. He is also the 2nd of all-time in games in which a QB threw for 300 or more yards at 55 (Dan Marino is 1st at 63). He is in exclusive company with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning to be one of only three players to beat every team in the NFL. Brett Favre comes off one of his best seasons ever (28 TDS, 15 INTS, 4,155 YDS). His 95.7 QB rating last season was 6th in the league.

The N.Y. Jets and their fans hope that Brett Favre can jettison them into the playoffs. At the very least, the presence of Favre will give the Jets hope and respectability. Many N.Y. Jets fans have been hoping for something miraculous that can help turn this team around. The name of the miracle may in fact be, Brett Favre.
