"Wet & wild victory for the Colts and Tony Dungy"
Sunday night, Feb.4, 2007 in Miami Florida, the nation saw a sloppy, exciting rain soaked NFL title game. The Indianapolis Colts beat the Chicago Bears in a 29-17 victory.
Peyton Manning , Colts quarterback, won the MVP award. It was held in the Dolphin Stadium in Miami.
Billy Joel sang the National Anthem to open the game. Pop star Prince performed in the half- time, putting on a spectacular show singing his hit, "Purple Rain" in violet lights amid driving rain. This was the first Super Bowl to be played in the rain and the first NFL title for the Colts since 1984. The story is about perseverance, character, triumph over adversity, and faith in God.
The Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy had an extraordinary day. He is the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl and he did it against his good friend and protégé Lovie Smith, head coach of the Bears. This game featured the first two African- American Christian coaches in the Super Bowl! According to the associated press, Tony Dungy said, "I am proud to be the first African American coach to win this, but, again, more than anything, Lovie Smith and I are not only African American but Christian coaches, showing you can do it the Lord’s way, We’re proud of that."
Dungy had gone through some stormy years, losing his first head coaching job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then losing his son to suicide in 2005.
Persistence and faith in God brought him and his Colts to victory after struggling for four years. Dungy’s unwavering strength has defined him in good times and bad. He is a good coach who saw to his teams family lives as well as their professional lives. He allowed them to visit with their families before the game.
